Cape Town to Arniston
Our tour began by driving East along the coast hugging False Bay as far as Hermanus where we cut inland towards Arniston, taking a detour along the way to visit Cape Agulhas, the Southern tip of Africa. Known as the whale watching capital of South Africa, Hermanus is perfectly positioned on the windswept coast of Walker Bay for seeing migratory southern right whales. They travel to these sheltered waters from Antarctica to breed and calve, and the best chance of a close encounter with them is between June and November. Much of the drive from Hermanus passes boring farmland. The distances in South Africa are deceiving - it is a vast country - and it is a full day’s drive.
APOLOGIES for some poor photos taken from the coach either blurred or containing reflections which cannot be successfully edited out. I have included them to give context to the landscape of our trip.
